Vegan Honey + Earl Grey Gin Old Fashioned

Vegan Honey + Earl Grey Gin Old Fashioned

To celebrate Veganuary this year, we really wanted to find interesting ways to create unique cocktails centered around plant-based versions of traditionally non-vegan ingredients. After our first attempt - a Vegan Maple Cereal Milk Punch - turned out so well, we were so excited to shift our focus to creating this cocktail highlighting an incredible plant-based honey! For this drink, we started out by making a vegan honey syrup (to slightly dilute the vegan honey so that it is easier to incorporate into the drink) and infusing a cup of one of our favorite gins with a heaping tablespoon of earl grey tea - because what could pair better with vegan honey than the rich, floral notes of earl grey? From there, mixing up one (or two!) of these incredible cold-weather cocktails is as quick and easy as making a classic old fashioned - just combine your earl grey-infused gin, vegan honey syrup, and bitters in an ice-filled mixing glass, stir, and strain over a large ice cube for a slow-sipping drink perfect for these freezing winter months!

Ingredients:

For Cocktail:

  • 2 oz earl grey-infused gin (see recipe below)

  • 1/2 oz vegan honey syrup (see recipe below)

  • 1 dash Angostura bitters

  • 1 dash lavender bitters

For Earl Grey-Infused Gin:

  • 1 tbsp earl grey tea leaves

  • 1 cup gin

For Vegan Honey Syrup:

  • 3/4 cup vegan honey (we used Bee Free Honee!)

  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions:

  1. To make earl grey-infused gin, combine gin and earl grey tea leaves in an airtight container and let it infuse for 20 hours. After 20 hours, strain out the tea leaves and store in an airtight container.

  2. To make vegan honey syrup, combine vegan honey and water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until fully incorporated. When fully incorporated, let the syrup cool completely, transfer to an airtight container, and refrigerate.

  3. Combine earl grey-infused gin, vegan honey syrup, Angostura bitters, and lavender bitters in a mixing glass and fill with ice.

  4. Stir and strain into an old fashioned glass or glass mug over a large ice cube.

  5. Enjoy!
