Black Bean Burgers

Black bean burgers: the staple of every non-vegan restaurant's vegan/vegetarian selection. Don't get me wrong - I really do appreciate when restaurants accommodate non-meat eaters, but I can't tell you how many times I have been let down by an under-seasoned, bland black bean burger. I began to lose faith in them completely. And then one day - when I had just gotten home from a long, exhausting day of flying across the country - I walked in to find that my amazing husband had a piping-hot black bean burger on the table waiting for me. It was DELICIOUS! It was smoky and perfectly crispy! I wanted it all the time after that! And that burger was the first iteration of this recipe, which has an amazing barbecue flavor that makes it the perfect patty for a classic hamburger! You can cook it in a skillet in the winter or pop it on the grill in the summer! Either way, it is a delicious, protein-packed addition to any barbecue! For a complete meal, pair with our super easy to make french fries!

Ingredients:

For Patties:

  • 3 tbsp ground flaxseed + 5 tbsp water (we use Bob's Red Mill Organic Golden Flaxseed Meal!)

  • 1 can (15 oz) of black beans, drained
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/8 tsp ground cayenne pepper
  • 10 turns fresh-cracked black pepper
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vegan Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • 1 tbsp barbecue sauce

For Serving:

  • Hamburger buns

  • Vegan cheddar cheese slices
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato, sliced
  • Pickle slices
  • Vegan mayo
  • Ketchup
  • White onion, sliced

Instructions:

  1. Mix ground flaxseed with water in a small bowl and set aside until thickened. Mash black beans in a large bowl with a fork or potato masher (when finished, there should be only partial pieces of black beans remaining). 

  2. Combine the flaxseed mixture and all remaining ingredients in the bowl with the black beans and stir until fully incorporated. Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning as needed. Tip: If the mixture tastes bland, start by adding a little more salt, as salt brings out the flavors of other spices. The cooking process will also help bring out the flavor, so you don't want to go overboard!

  3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions, and form into patties. Tip: For even patty sizes, press down with your knuckles to flatten the mixture in the bowl and use a butter knife to cut the flattened mixture into 4 portions (like you would a pie). Be sure to use pressure when you shape the patties so they don't crumble!

  4. Cook the patties in a skillet over medium-high heat with 2 tbsp of olive oil until crispy on each side (about 3-4 minutes per side). 

  5. Pop those patties on some toasted buns and stack them high with toppings!

  6. Enjoy!
