As far back as I can remember, I have always been in love with fresh bread. It didn't matter how far off in the woods I was behind our house, the second I got a whiff of fresh bread cooking at home, I broke out running back to the house to beg my mom for a slice! So of course, one of my absolute favorite activities was when my parents took us to any one of the many chain restaurants nearby that served unlimited breadsticks - it was my Olympics!  And every time, the goal was to eat as many breadsticks as they would bring me! This recipe was developed to fill the longing I had in my heart for those delicious garlicky, buttery breadsticks of my childhood! At the same time, it is also meant to be quick and easy - because as we all know, when you have a hankering for a good breadstick, you don't want to be held up by a recipe with a dozen different steps that takes over an hour! We ate our way through countless iterations of this recipe (a process we didn't mind at all!) to get it just right, and we know you will love it! We promise you won't be able to eat just one!

For Breadsticks:

  • 1 tbsp quick-rise yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegan butter, melted
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for handling)

For Topping:

  • 3 tbsp vegan butter, melted
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 450° F (230° C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 

  2. Whisk together the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Allow the yeast to sit for 10 minutes until yeast has grown into a fragrant dome. 

  3. Once the yeast is activated, add the salt, butter, and flour. Stir until fully incorporated and a wet ball of dough forms.

  4. Heavily dust a clean prep surface with flour. Roll the dough out onto the flour and thoroughly dust with flour. Using your hands, divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Using plenty of flour, gently roll out the smaller dough balls into 6-inch sticks and place onto the baking sheet.

  5. Place in oven until golden, about 20-25 minutes. While baking, combine the melted butter, salt, garlic powder, and oregano. 

  6. Once golden, remove from oven and brush with the butter mixture. Place back in oven for 2 minutes.

  7. Enjoy!
