Midwinter (Cognac + Fernet + Peppermint Old-Fashioned)

Midwinter (Cognac + Fernet + Peppermint Old-Fashioned)

Midwinter (i.e. the Winter Solstice) is officially upon us! And what better way to celebrate the coming winter months than with a rich, decadent twist on the classic old-fashioned? For this seasonal old-fashioned, we combined fruity, warming cognac with Fernet Branca, maple syrup, a homemade cold brew white + peppermint tea, and a couple dashes of Angostura bitters to create a full-bodied drink overflowing with flavors of dark fruits, maple, peppermint and spice! Whether you’re serving this as a festive treat for you guests this holiday season or treating yourself to a slow-sipping cocktail while warming up in front of a roaring fireplace, we know you will love this warming winter drink as much as we do and return to it time and time again throughout these coming winter months (or at least, we know we will!).

For Cocktail:

  • 1 1/2 oz cognac

  • 1/2 oz Fernet Branca

  • 1/2 oz maple syrup

  • 1 oz cold brew white + peppermint tea (see recipe below)

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

  • Cinnamon stick (for garnish)

For Cold Brew White + Peppermint Tea:

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 tbsp white tea leaves (or 3 tea bags)

  • 1 tbsp peppermint tea (or 3 tea bags)

  1. To make cold brew tea, combine water, white tea leaves, and peppermint tea in a large pitcher (or similar covered container like a mason jar). Stir briefly to ensure all of the tea leaves are fully submerged. Let the tea steep at room temperature for 20 hours. After steeping, strain using a coffee filter or cheesecloth. Pour strained cold brew tea into an airtight glass container (like a mason jar!) and store in the refrigerator. If stored properly, the concentrate should keep for at least two weeks.

  2. Combine cognac, Fernet Branca, maple syrup, cold brew tea, and angostura bitters in a mixing glass and fill with ice.

  3. Stir and strain into an old-fashioned glass over crushed ice and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

  4. Enjoy!
