Half Acre Beer Company

Half Acre Beer Company

At This and That Kitchen, we are HUGE fans of Half Acre Beer Company, and we have been since our very first days living in Chicago! In fact, our very first night in Chicago (after a LONG drive up with a moving van full of furniture!), we hunkered down on the floor of our unfurnished apartment and enjoyed a four-pack of Half Acre's Daisy Cutter (an incredibly refreshing, floral pale ale that is a true Chicago classic!). Since then, we've tried a wide variety of beers from Half Acre, and they honestly never disappoint - whether it's their massive lineup of hoppy beers or incredible stouts like Big Hugs (made with Dark Matter Coffee - another Chicago staple!), we seriously can't get enough!

When it comes to visiting Half Acre, they actually have two separate breweries and taprooms - their original Lincoln Brewery and their new Balmoral Brewery. Over the years, we have visited both - and each is great in its own way! The Lincoln Brewery has a very relaxed, laid-back atmosphere with communal tables in a cozy space. It's also where they host incredible release events like their Bug Hugs release, which we finally had the chance to attend this last year! It was an awesome experience with a huge crowd of craft beer lovers and PLENTY of free samples of Big Hugs and its variants - we had a blast! The Balmoral Brewery - which we just visited for the first time recently - is most notable for its incredible outdoor beer garden - the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon in Chicago!

Since our most recent experience visiting Half Acre was a trip to their beer garden at the Balmoral Brewery, we wanted to highlight a few of the beers we had the chance to sample during our visit. Overall, we tried four different beers - Angles (a tropical, floral IPA made with Idaho-7, Citra Cryo, and Vic Secret hops), Animal Law (an IPA with notes of stone fruit and a strong malt character brewed with Citra, Simcoe, Galaxy, and Mosaic Cryo hops), From the Trees (a fruit-forward pale ale brewed with mango and guava and dry-hopped with Mosaic, Citra, and Vic Secret hops), and Knowplace (a crisp, refreshing hoppy lager). At the end of the day, all of these were exceptional - especially for enjoying outside in the beautiful summer weather! - but our absolute favorites were Knowplace and Angles! That said, we highly recommend trying any of the four if they happen to be available when you visit (because you should!).

Overall, Half Acre Beer Company is an incredible brewery that continues to impress us with their innovative use of hops and endless unique and interesting creations - and that's exactly why we keep going back! Whether you live in Chicago or are just visiting for a day or two, we highly recommend going out of your way to visit one of their taprooms (though if the weather is nice, the Balmoral Brewery's beer garden is the place to be!).
